D&D News Autumn 2008 - Excellence Awards

UK Excellence Awards

The ceremony for the national excellence awards, the British Quality Foundation’s 2008 UK Excellence Awards, was held at the Hilton Park Lane, London, in October.

As usual we hosted a table for some friends of D&D. Our guests were Rose Viggiani, Genevieve Glover, Gordon Wakeford, Martin Leeks, Ed Butler, Terry Gilbert, James Scully, and Steve Wells. Many thanks to them for making it such a good time. (Coincidentally, both Gordon and Steve headed up previous UK Award winning organisations.)

Some UK winners of Recognised for Excellence also received their certificates. Our picture shows Martin Leeks of Siemens Transportation with theirs. Good friend Melissa Rancourt of the EFQM (our guest in previous years but in exile this time on the ‘top table’!) is on the left, having made the presentation. Mike Helliwell of Siemens is hiding behind host Louise Minchin.

We would like to congratulate this year’s winners, Halcrow Consulting Business Group, Liverpool John Moores University, and yet another school from Northern Ireland, St Colman’s College, Newry.

HRH The Princess Royal, the BQF Patron, was present again. She made the point that in the current troublesome times it makes sense to do the basics well, and that the Excellence Model can help with that aim.

London Excellence Awards, Southern England Excellence Award and Sheikh Khalifa Excellence Award

Dave and Jo Walters at 2008 London Excellence Awards

In the summer we attended the London Excellence Awards at Lords Cricket Ground. It was a beautiful evening in the sunshine before the celebrations took place (photographic evidence on the right: Dave with Jo Walters of the Chartered Quality Institute) and we were able to collect our Ambassadors certificate in front of over 300 people.

We have not just been enjoying the celebrations, although you might think otherwise. We’ve supported the development, launch and implementation of the inaugural Southern England Excellence Award with the BQF, including Dave delivering workshops to applicants about developing their applications. The first award was presented to 3663 First for Foodservice’s Salisbury Depot. We will continue to promote the award through its second year.

And Derek was off on his travels again to support Awards. This time he has been training organisations in Abu Dhabi in preparation for their entries to the Sheikh Khalifa Excellence Award, which is also based on the EFQM Excellence Model.
