Customer's main objective
- To carry out a first self-assessment to
- get an initial measure of 'excellence' so that future progress can be assessed
- identify strengths and further Areas for Improvement
- act as a foundation for using the Excellence Model to help manage the organisation
Approach
- We agreed a personalised process which involved an evidence based self-assessment workshop, combined with a one day site visit by us.
Outcomes/benefits
- Identified a range of specific Areas for Improvement, which have been prioritised for action
- Identified a number of themes, including understanding their relative strengths in developing sound 'Approaches' compared with 'Deploying' them effectively
- Gave an opportunity to feed our own independent views from site visit into the self-assessment workshop. This sometimes threw up new issues, and at other times supported what the self-assessors had identified, but because it was discussed in the workshop it was owned by the business
- Gave opportunity for involvement of the 'middle leaders', who made up most of the self-assessment team and who now wish to continue with their involvement in Excellence
- When we facilitated the subsequent prioritisation workshop, involving both the self-assessors and the senior management team, we were bowled over by the way the Excellence framework positively supported the development of further teamwork and understanding of the key issues.
Summary of our role
- Designing and developing the assessment process, to include a short site visit by us
- Training the self-assessment team about Excellence, the Model, and the process, including how to use our 'pro-forma' evidence gathering workbook
- Giving 'awareness' training about Excellence and the Model to the whole leader team, as a supportive educational/developmental activity
- Carrying out a short site visit to identify some key issues for ourselves and to show the constructive and positive culture of the Excellence Model
- Facilitating the consensus workshop and then the production of Feedback Reports for action by project teams
- Delivering a feedback session to the whole leader team, and facilitating an initial prioritisation exercise of Areas for Improvement
