Case Study
Customer
Division of Dow Chemical Company - private sector
Customer's main objective
- Our client used self assessment against the Model as part of their approach to improvement - either data-driven workshops or 75 page Award style assessments. The objective for this exercise was to:
- Create the optimum 75 page portfolio of evidence for 'friendly' external assessment
Feedback comments
"Thank you for the advice and counsel on the written document! I don't know how the assessment will turnout, but I do know the document is presented much better than it would have been if you had not been involved. Look forward to working with you again some time in the future."
Approach
- Client was based in US and had already undertaken workshop-style assessments, so had knowledge of the Model, but this was their first 75 page document.
- We had phone calls initially to discuss some of the key requirements in a well presented 'submission'
- Document sections were emailed to us for review them and we returned improvement comments on presentation and content. When helpful we discussed them further by phone
- While the prime objective was document improvements, we were also able to give potential business related areas for improvement, although these tended to be 'prima facie' as we had not necessarily seen the full story about the approaches
Outcomes/benefits
- The portfolio of evidence about the business was better structured to make it easier for the assessors to do a good assessment
- The subsequent assessment has identified key improvement opportunities for the business to work on before undertaking another assessment
Summary of our role
- Using our experience of assessing documents to help the business unit put forward the best picture of itself, to ensure the best possible quality of assessment. While it may be easy to say that the assessors should just get on with assessing, it's not quite like that in reality!
- Through the manner of our coaching, ensure that the participants enjoy the process and remain enthusiastic supporters of the Excellence Model and its use.
