Case Study
Customer
International organisation (private sector) split into multiple business units
Customer's main objective
Client runs an internal quality award scheme based on the EFQM Excellence Model to:
- Extend use of the Excellence Model through encouragement not mandate
- Recognise excellent achievement
- Share good practices identified in the award submissions
Feedback comments
"Dear Derek Thanks for the papers. Excellent job ! .... Your project suggestion is certainly worth discussing for next year"
Approach
- Business units submit a short application based on one criterion of the Model, which is assessed against the relevant Criterion requirements and the RADAR card
- All applicants receive a feedback report on their submission
- External validation of the highest scoring applications is obtained to ensure that the internal assessments are robust and consistent
- Winners receive their awards at a major management conference
Outcomes/benefits
- The Award scheme has now been running successfully for a number of years, with review and appropriate refinement each year
- Using this voluntary approach to extending use of the Model is indeed increasing its use in the organisation through demonstrating benefits to applicants
Summary of our role
- We have undertaken the external validation role and helped ensure that finalist recommendations are made on the basis of objective assessment against the Excellence Model
- We have also contributed suggestions to the annual review of the scheme.
